It inhibits the starch-digesting enzyme involved in the digestion of complex carbohydrates. It slows down the absorption of sugars and increases satiety. One gram of faseolamine neutralises 2,750 calories of starch in vitro (about 600g of spaghetti). Nopal, a cactus plant, is rich in vitamin C, vegetable fibre and pectins. The pectins it contains are polysaccharides that regulate the absorption of glucose in the intestine, thus preventing postprandial hyperglycaemia. Its soluble fibre produces satiety and is able to reduce the absorption of dietary fats at each meal.
